What is the Best CBD for Dogs?

When it comes to CBD oil for pets, it’s important to understand that the pet industry isn’t regulated in the same way that products for humans are regulated. You should choose a company with an excellent reputation. Knowing a little about how CBD is processed is a fantastic way to know if you are getting a quality product.

How It’s Extracted Makes a Difference

There are several ways in which the CBD can be extracted from the industrialized hemp that has been harvested for this purpose. Knowing where that hemp came from is also and excellent piece of information that can help you determine the quality of your CBD choice.

CBD that has been grown within the United States will have been overseen by the USDA. All farmers who grow hemp in the United States do so under heavy regulation. They apply for a license to be able to grow hemp and these crops are carefully monitored. This is not the case in other countries, so knowing the source of the hemp from which your product has been extracted is ideal.

Once the hemp makes it to a facility that will extract it, it will be done in one of the following ways:

  • Carbon Dioxide Extraction – This is often referred to as CO2 extraction. This process is the preferred method. The hemp is placed in a sealed chamber that is pumped full of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide breaks down the hemp and releases the oils from it. Then the carbon dioxide is removed. It pulls the CBD out with it and goes into a third chamber, where the gas escapes and only the CBD oil is left behind. This is considered the safest and most efficient method of extraction, much preferred over other methods.

  • Steam Distillation – In this method, steam causes the CBD oil to separate from the plant matter. Flasks are used to contain the hemp. Another flask is below the one containing the hemp and is filled with water that is boiled. As water heats, the steam moves upward into the flask that contains the hemp. The CBD is separated as oil vapor, by the steam. The oil/water mix is then distilled to remove the water from the oil, leaving the CBD oil. This is more of an antiquated process but some companies do still use this process.

  • Solvent Extraction – This method is more efficient than the steam distillation method but it involves adding solvents. The solvents most often used are naphtha, petroleum, butane, or propane. While this process is the least expensive method, it is also the one that causes the most concern. The solvents may leave residues that are toxic, potentially placing users at risk of cancer.

As you can see, CO2 extracted CBD is far more ideal. This is the type of CBD you should look for. When you are seeking a CBD for dogs, you should look for the one that is extracted with this method and sold by a reputable company. These are not always easy to find, so doing your homework is necessary.
