You may think that all CBD oil is the same, but the quality of CBD oil has a lot to do with how it is made. And since we all want the best for our furry family members, we want to make sure we are getting the best CBD oil for your dog.
Where it starts
It all starts with the industrial hemp plant. Industrial hemp is from the plant species Cannabis sativa, which is high in fiber and low in active THC. It usually consists of a main stalk covered in leaves and can reach between 6 to 15 feet in height.
Sometimes when you see “Cannabis” you automatically assume that it will contain THC, the compound responsible for getting “high”, but that is simply not the case. Within the Cannabis plant species, there are different strains. Cannabis with high amounts of THC can be found in the Indica strain, NOT the sativa strain. In other words, industrial hemp is a separate plant and therefore does not have the same chemical makeup.
Industrial hemp is also known for cleansing soil so it is important the hemp is organic. Otherwise if your industrial hemp is not organic, different chemicals and toxins can be present in the finished CBD oil product.
Furthermore, in order to produce industrial hemp in the United States, the grower or farmer must obtain a permit from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to ensure the hemp is less than 0.3% THC. This is significant to mention because you can be sure that the industrial hemp your CBD oil is coming from is regulated. You definitely want less than 0.3% THC (or preferably none) because THC in high amounts can be toxic to your dog.
The industrial hemp is then cultivated and sent for CBD extraction. There are a few different extraction methods, and you guessed it, it does matter which one is used. Let’s start with the safest:
- CO2 Extraction. This extraction method process takes place by pushing CO2 through the plant at high pressures and low temperatures. This cleanly extracts the CBD in its purest form, ensuring the product is safe and free from chlorophyll. This extraction method is the most expensive, but also the best and cleanest, especially for your dog.
- Ethanol Extraction. This extraction method uses ethanol to strip away the cannabinoids and terpenes from the hemp plant. But by using this method, it also extracts chlorophyll and possibly other harmful contaminants which can lead to unpleasant side effects for your dog.
- Olive Oil Extraction. The first step in this extraction method is to heat the hemp plant to a certain temperature for a specific amount of time to activate the plant’s chemicals. Once this step is completed, you add the plant material to olive oil and heat it to 212® F for up to 2 hours. This method is commonly used because you can do it easily at home. However, the amount of CBD extracted through this method is minimal.
After extracted, the CBD is usually combined with a carrier oil, put into a capsule, or processed further into a powder or isolate form.
