Your dog: he’s your best friend. He’d do anything for you, and you would do anything for him. That’s why it’s so hard to see our canine companions suffering. We can’t explain to them what’s happening, and even if we can guess, they can’t tell us where it hurts. Often we feel we’d do anything to help alleviate their suffering.

Fortunately, a new tool has emerged in the battle to give our dogs happier, healthier lives. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a non-psychoactive cannabis compound the full benefits of which are currently being explored by scientists. Already, studies have demonstrated overwhelmingly positive effects of the compound on mammals of all stripes. And that includes your dog.

But how should you give your dog CBD? You have a few choices, and the selection you make depends on your dog himself.

CBD Oils

CBD oils are administered using a small dropper. There are a couple of ways to deliver the compound effectively. If your dog responds well to it, you can hold his mouth open and simply place a couple of drops on his tongue. However, if being held that way makes your dog anxious or if he simply won’t sit still, you have a few other choices. Try placing the drops of CBD oil on a dog treat and feeding it to him. You can also add the drops to wet dog food, if that is what your dog eats.

How much you give your dog depends on his weight. A rough “starting point” is 0.05mg x lb., twice daily. Dogs weighing up to 20 pounds should try a starting dosage of 2mg per day. Dogs between 20 and 40 pounds can begin with 2mg-4mg a day. And heavier dogs may want to start with even more. You can increase your dog’s dosage slowly as you monitor the effects. Medium or high dose tinctures offer higher concentrations of CBD, so make sure to follow dosing instructions closely.

CBD Chewables

Where CBD oils help more with anxiety, stress, pain, and nausea, chewable tablets and treats are recommended for dogs suffering from arthritis and joint pain. The great news about chewable tablets is that your dog is likely to find them very easy to take. You can divide them into halves or quarters, depending on how much you want your dog to have.

When using CBD chewable tablets, make sure you follow the instructions on the packaging carefully. Dosing instructions are laid out specifically on each product to best benefit your dog.
