CBD Research for Dogs

Scientists at universities nationwide are currently studying the effects of CBD on dogs, with very promising results. An overwhelming majority of dogs on whom CBD was used showed a reduction in epileptic seizure activity. We know that the endocannabinoid system is affected by seizures and epilepsy thanks to scientific research on the subject. CBD, with its own impact on endocannabinoid receptors, is often able to restore equilibrium and help epileptic dogs for whom nothing else has worked.

CBD ResearchMeanwhile, researchers at Cornell University put CBD to the test as a potential treatment for osteoarthritic dogs. The research found that even a small dose of CBD was able to increase comfort and mobility for these dogs. If your best friend is aging and finding it more difficult to get around, CBD may be the answer you’re looking for to help reduce his pain and improve his quality of life.

One condition that many dogs deal with is anxiety, and many of the coping strategies humans use to deal with our own anxiety just don’t work for dogs. One thing that might? CBD. Studies have shown that it has the capability to reduce anxiety in mammals by boosting signaling through the serotonin receptors in the brain. It works the same way in dogs and humans alike—the 5HT1-A receptors, found in high density in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala, are acted upon by CBD in such a way that serotonin is released. Because the 5HT1-A receptors are located in areas of the brain known to be involved in anxiety disorders, the boost of serotonin in these areas can make a significant difference.

This is great news for pet owners whose dogs suffer from anxiety. Having an anxious dog and being unable to comfort or reassure him is one of the most painful parts of dog ownership, and it’s also very common. It’s also a problem that affects many dogs. Separation anxiety is common, because dogs bond so closely with their owners. Rescue dogs are more prone to this affliction because of their traumatic past.

Thus far, we have discussed how the effects of CBD are the same for dogs as they are for humans. It must be noted, however, that dogs metabolize CBD differently. The CBD compound is able to linger for a longer period of time in dogs’ bodies without causing toxic effects. It may be, then, that CBD is even more effective for dogs than it is for humans.
