carrier oil

Are you thinking, what in the world is a carrier oil? And why does it have anything to do with CBD oil? Well chances are, the CBD oil product you are looking at for your dog contains a carrier oil.

What is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil can come from a variety of plant-based fats and helps provide a practical way of making the CBD more efficient and increasing the bioavailability. Bioavailability refers to the portion of the actual product that gets into your dog’s bloodstream/system. Carrier oils can also have other health benefits as well, depending on the kind of oil used.

The other purpose of a carrier oil is to ensure consistent and measurable dosage. When CBD is reduced to its purest form, it is a fine white powder. Because it is too difficult to isolate single granules of pure CBD, introducing a carrier oil to it makes it easier to measure the dosage.

What kinds of carrier oils are there?

The most common carrier oils are MCT (fractionated coconut oil), hemp seed, avocado, olive, grape seed, and palm oils. You may have even seen fish oil or krill oil. Some have different flavors while others don’t really have any flavor at all. You may also see different flavored oils, like bacon-flavor, to help entice your dog to ingest the oils easier.

What is the best carrier oil for my dog?

The carrier oil we recommend for CBD for your dog is MCT oil (coconut oil). It consists of at least 90% saturated fats, most of which are medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). You might be thinking, aren’t fats bad? Well the MCTs are “good” fat and can provide several benefits, such as being an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-viral, and being a source of fuel and energy. Moreover, there have been a few other benefits as well:

  • Can aid in digestion
  • Can improve brain energy and mental function
  • Can make your dogs’ coat glossy and sleep
  • Can benefit metabolic function, weight loss, arthritis, and bone health

While having many benefits of its’ own, MCT oil is a great carrier oil for CBD because they work together to provide the best possible benefits for your dog.

Are there any carrier oils to avoid?

If the CBD oil product you are looking at for your dog is formulated specifically for pets, chances are the carrier oil in it will be safe. However, we always recommend doing your own research and double checking the ingredients. Keeping our furry family members safe is always a high priority!
